  • Drinks Black Ink for Breakfast!

    By AHOILHOX5FSFK on 2005-10-25
My printer isn't quite as bad on ink as the above reviewer's, but it still goes through ink at an incredible rate -- I've never seen a printer like it.
Don't buy this printer unless you want to take out a second mortgage just to pay for ink!
Epson has some explaining to do with this one!

  • Black ink has a very short life ?

    By A2M2FB6ZBVTTZQ on 2005-10-24
I got this printer a month back or so.
I used is it to print hardly some 10 to 15 copies over the month.
Most of the times I went to advanced settings and said use black ink only as it was just some documents and nothing that needed color.
And with these few copies the black ink catridge is almost over ? Wondering if there is something I am doing wrong. If 15 copies need one full cartridge that is almost more than a $ for each page...Any other users ?
No complaints on the quality otherwise.

Talk about the price of ink! It seems as if Epson gives you half filled ink cartridges. I can print fifteen pages with a fresh ink cartridge and then I start getting warning notices that the printer is out of ink. Compare with HP print cartidges and see just how long they last. The printer is also slower than advertised. However, the quality of the final printed page was fantastic. Make wise choices.

  • My Epson C88 Rating

    By A3CJNFD4F518WQ on 2006-02-16
Teh feature I like most about this printer is the paper handling ability. I use several different weights and types of paper along with postage forms and the Epson C88 handles them well.

  • Nothing but grief

    By A2NF5RW5YAEQGC on 2006-11-21
I bought this for my small home office after my ever faithful C80 died after 3 years. I wanted the newer model because it was good for printing out decent photos and I have a lot of images of artwork to print out. As I am writing this I am on my third replacement printer, now the C88+ and I've gotten nothing but trouble from the C88 and the C88+

Sometimes the machine will not print at all, so i had my assistant check it out. First she made sure the driver was set in Page Setup, but after a while it became even more pickier and the driver setting would change the driver setting on its own.

Then after we got that fixed the printouts came out faded, even after a NEW BLACK INK CARTRIDGE WAS INSTALLED! We called Epson and they sent us the newer C88+ and still we're getting grief. The first one they sent over died after about a week and a half, it just refused to print and kept saying the ink was out immediately after we put in a fresh one, and now the new one we have is doing the same thing, so we're counting down till that one refuses to print.

We have to jump through hoops to get these printers to work and they still end up gving back another problem or setting itself back to the same problem and when you're trying to run a business you have no time to babysit and obsess about a printer. When you buy a piece of equipment is it too much to ask that it actually work and do the task its created for? NO!

Do yourself a favor and please don't waste your precious, fleeting time and money on this plastic piece of trouble and grief.

Easy to hook up, love the printer and quality of print. Color is great but is does us the black ink very quickly -- but I still would have bought this one -- love it.

  • Saving grace is waterproof ink
    By A1SJVVRMSZ1XAL on 2006-06-13
Yeah, it uses ink like crazy, and the ink is expensive, but if you need waterproof ink, Epson Ink rocks. I tried the Canon ink, and black ink runs or smears long after it's dry. Epson ink is quite waterproof and weather resistant, and that works for me, as I use it for outdoor advertising (door hangers, and such). You can get a product like InkSaver if you don't network your printer, to cut down on ink usage.

  • disappointed, and yes, it drinks ink!
    By A24V669HWUEH8Y on 2006-03-16
Long story short, I'd look elsewhere. I've had ongoing problems with the paper feeder, and the amount of ink this thing burns through is truly incredible. There have to be better choices.

  • Epson C88 Printer
    By A27QRR20TWJBZ8 on 2006-07-31
I needed an Epson ptinter to replace an Epson C86 which I bought from Amazon 18 months ago...So far, the Epson C88 prints well enough, but although the Ink is not finished, looking at the Ink left in the Cartridges, I tend to agree with others who have posted a review that this machine consumes a lot of Ink

  • I really like this very cheap printer
    By A1ERWR5A8OVLDH on 2006-10-12
What I like about this printer is that I can print DOS/Windows program reports via an LPT1 cable from my desktop and print Windows program reports via a USB cable from my laptop, all at the same time. My C88 printer was supposedly a "refurbished" discounted model from the Epson store but it came out of the box with what appeared to be original factory film and tape and in perfect condition.

My experience with Epson in general is that their printers and all-in-ones don't seem to last very long. I'm hoping that the C88 will last longer than my last two basic HP Deskjets which lasted months, rather than years, even with light printing. The Epson DuraBrite/Claria color inks last forever but are frankly dull and muddy compared to the short lived but deeply colored and sharp HP dye inks. HP now offers longer lived inks in some of their printer models.

The Epson driver software that comes with this printer is great. I especially like the Epson Web-To-Page software on the CD.

The black and the color C88 ink cartridges are on the small side but for me they'll be good enough. You certainly can't complain about the price for this simple basic text/color inkjet printer.

  • Junk
    By A3AHLCDZXBCSZD on 2006-03-16
The only reason I rated this printer a 1, is that, there is no lower mark. The installation program did not work and the printer did not work. Buy an excellent printer, a Canon iP4200.

  • Great bang for the buck but must have right combo
    By A2N9XUNY77QZTG on 2008-03-09
Bought four of these direct from Epson over a year ago. Currently using two actively with fantastic results. This little gem never clogs or messes up. The secret is not to use Epson's crappy ink. It is designed to make them money with wasted ink with continual cleaning cycles every time it starts. I instead threw their junk cartridges away and installed a Kyson [...] CIS system (continuous ink system) on each system and I have been printing as much or as little as I want with no clogging or any other problems. Kyson's ink is far superior to Epson's and is formulated so perfectly that I have had no problems what so ever with printing. I also use their system on an Epson R260 with even better results. I thoroughly tested the CIS units for over a year under all sorts of conditions and had no problems with their product and the prices are excellent. They also carry replacement ink which I have also used and it is fantastic. 317-536-8127 -Guy

  • Text printing great. Ink usage not so great.
    By A31FH6VPXY3YCP on 2006-06-29
I saw info for another Epson printer that may be useful for this one. It was said to leave your printer turned on because some ink is lost every time you turn the printer on. Power consumption is minimal on new printers.

The black printouts look clear, dark, and easy to read. I have't done much color so really cannot comment.

The 4 separate ink cartridges make it nice. Do get at least 1 black replacement cartridge to have on hand since the black cartridge is rather small. I wish Epson had given us the option of getting a double capacity black cartridge.

  • An horrible machine
    By AXB07WEBGFB4C on 2007-01-04
I just read all comments on this page, and I agree with all negative comments.
I went through 2 Epson printers this year, and I run a business at home.
I agree, the ink goes like crazy, and then, if for some reason, you didn't place
the paper correctly, it is simply the end. I just went crazy with the two machines!

  • ok printer, has flaws
    By A1QM974HB5KWH5 on 2008-08-25
Has been a reliable printer. I have needed to clean the heads often to keep from having many lines on my pictures. Big downfall is that, after a while, the pages started printing crooked. Pictures and text aren't very sharp either.
